Recognize what combining different kinds of input enables and where it can fail.

In plain language

A modality is a kind of information: text, an image, audio, or video. A multimodal system can use more than one kind. An assistant might read a picture of a chart alongside your question, or combine spoken words with a written document.

Support differs by model and application. Uploading a video does not tell you how every frame or sound is processed. Small text, poor audio, ambiguous pictures and missing context can all lead to mistakes. Compare the answer with the original input before using it.

Try thinking about it this way

You photograph a timetable and ask for the next bus. First check that the assistant read the route, date and small print correctly. A clear explanation is not evidence that every pixel was understood.

Try it yourself

Describe one detail a model might miss in a blurry chart. Decide how you would verify that detail.

Go deeper · for developers and architects

Test relevant input quality, supported formats, resolution and latency. Evaluate important attributes separately: reading text, locating objects and reasoning about a diagram are different tasks.
